The egg producing component of Past Thyme Farm happened quite by chance. Our neighbor called one day and asked if we wanted about 40 “free” chicks (all layers) shipped by mistake to the local feed store. At that time we had no layers on the property. We didn’t even have a chicken coop! But we still said yes, and I don’t believe I have eaten a “factory produced” egg since. That was three years ago.
Our layers are a mix of Rhode Island Reds, Golden Laced Wyandottes, Araucanas, New Hampshire Reds, Buff Orpingtons and Black Australorps.
They spend most of the season (pasture allowing) in the Chicken Tractor
out in one of our pastures. When the pastures are under snow they all hang out in the chicken coop.
For Past Thyme Farm to succeed at sustainability, it is very important that every component we put onto our farm gives back to the farm more that it takes!
Our layers currently produce about a dozen eggs a day. We strive for a production level that services only our needs and those of our renters.
Our layers distribute lots of nitrates back to our fields and help control the farms insects & bugs by eating them.
Plus they always seem to be a “Big Hit” with the little guests that visit our farm!
